Sony ditches weaker PS5 due to rapid obsolescence

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan gave an interview to Japanese AV Watch , in which he explained why the company decided not to release a less powerful version of the PlayStation 5 by analogy with the Xbox Series S.

Ryan said he respects all of Microsoft’s decisions, but felt that a weaker PS5 would be outdated too quickly.

I respect and understand all solutions and philosophy of the competitor represented by Microsoft. Obviously, price is the most important factor, but we have full confidence in our current strategy and its effect.

If you look back in time, you will realize that creating a weak and cheap console is not the path that will lead to decent results. We considered this option and found that the less powerful PS5 would be problematic.

Users want their console to last four, five, six, and even seven years. They want to be sure that the system will not become obsolete in two to three years. Sony ditches weaker PS5 due to rapid obsolescence.

Ryan’s words have been confirmed more than once by many developers. They stated that Series S is very attractive from a buyer’s point of view, but will cause a lot of problems when creating games.
