Yakuza: Like a Dragon is absolutely not a typical and unusual game for our mentality. Yes, of course, it has its own audience in our area, but such an audience is incomparably smaller than, say, Sleeping Dogs. And all fans of this series, as well as any narrow audience, are very fastidious and closed societies, so to speak.

Hence the next paragraph, which should give a clear idea for such an audience – this review is as far as possible from what you want to see or hear. The author of the material is not an adherent of Japanese culture, does not know all the nuances of the series and is not touched in the strongest way by the presence of Kiryu or other characters in the game. Alas, the knowledge of this game series starts and ends with this game.

Therefore, if you, like me, are not particularly aware of what is at stake, then this material is for you. We will try to look at the game through the eyes of a person who, for the first time in his life, has sat down to such a game and greatly changes his impression of it from the beginning of the game to its end, and this is exactly what happened.

Firstly, this game is a kind of reboot or a new round for the entire series. All the previous parts were connected by one plot, and if it were a direct continuation, the game could be safely attributed to those that it would not be possible to get acquainted with. And this is quite logical for a series of games that has a decade of history. You just won’t be able to master them in an evening. Therefore, Yakuza: Like a Dragon begins a new story, with a new protagonist and is perceived as an independent game.

Secondly, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is really about everything Japanese, culture, yakuza, family, devotion, honor and the value of a word. This is not an entertaining and entertaining show with battles, the benchmark here goes to a very adult audience who can understand all the vicissitudes in life. For example, the main character spent 18 years in prison and by the time of his release he was completely lost in the realities of life. He does not know how to use a smartphone, does not know what a vape, a selfie stick, and in general everything around him is a completely new world, even though he was here before.

Again, you need to understand that the game is an incredibly large cutscene, which periodically lets you go into the open world to do some things in order to move further along the plot or change the location. There are 13 chapters in the storyline, which will take you enough time to complete, not including side quests and mini-games. But there is another side of the coin – the lack of localization of at least subtitles.

The game has an incredible amount of dialogue through which both the characters and the traditions of this world are revealed, not to mention the plot. There are English and Japanese voice acting, with subtitles, things are completely symmetrical. At some point, it gets tired to read so much text in English. But all this is really leveled by the plot outline, which is really interesting to follow. And official Russian subtitles were promised by January next year. In this sense, it is still better to wait until next year and play the canon version: Japanese sound, Russian subtitles. It seems that then the immersion in the atmosphere of the game will be maximum.

Gameplay you are faced with the task of fighting everything that you can and cannot. Naturally, this is the most simplified description of the entire gameplay, but formally this is true. The streets are littered with bandits and random battles, to progress through the story you need to beat someone up, and then there are bosses. They are even stronger, hit even more painfully and even faster carry you forward with their feet from the combat zones. There are also conditional dungeons, which are easier to call one and long fight with a dozen different gang members.

Add to this the ability to form a team of 4 characters, each with their own unique attack skills, leading to different damage or results from it. Somehow the techniques stun opponents, some act on the area. During the battle, you can heal yourself if everything is bad, and the suitcases collected at the location can give you, for example, a hand grenade. And already she, in turn, will give a great advantage in battle.

By the way, the battles are turn-based. At first, this one seems somehow strange and completely unnecessary, but over time you get used to it and understand the combat system better. In general, it looks organic. Especially when you have a cop, a bum and a bartender in your team – we dream for battles. If you do not win by force and power, then by shocking and experience. When using special attacks, you can get on small QTEs, the successful completion of which will increase the damage done.

There is not much to complain about, except that sometimes the game’s narrative has some imbalance. It is expressed in the fact that you either constantly fight without a break, or watch the plot setting for an hour, which tells a dozen details. Moreover, this can last so long that the console or TV dims the brightness of the monitor due to inactivity. On the other hand, you don’t get bored in any of these moments. Rather, it is a feature of the game that needs to be accepted and taken for granted. Otherwise, Yakuza: Like a Dragon would look like tracing paper.

Now about what is also important – how the game looks on the Xbox Series X. Judging by those comparisons that there is and personal experience – the version for the new console is the best of all currently presented at the moment. But here, too, there is a caveat that is very important. By itself, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is not the most technologically advanced game in the world. She has a rather banal schedule by modern standards and no emphasis is placed on it, which is quite obvious. Another thing is that the Xbox Series X has an honest 4K resolution and an honest 60 frames per second, at least that’s what the official statements say.

In this case, on the console itself, you can choose between two graphics settings “maximum resolution” and “normal”. There is a suspicion that 4K still produces 30 frames per second, but 60 frames is achieved by reducing the resolution. In any case, the overall detail and clarity of the picture is clearly higher here than on other platforms. In any case, as a starting game and something completely original in the gaming experience, we can safely recommend it.

Only the moments when in the cut-scenes against the background the inhabitants of the city reach the middle of the screen and all as one unfold in the opposite direction look funny. Also, the animations of the opponents could be more varied, as well as their clothes. Sometimes four people appear in front of you with exactly the same clothes, postures and movements – a kind of cloning. Even in the middle of the frame, any city NPC can simply dissolve and disappear right before your eyes. Well, children’s problems with the fact that when you change the angle of the cut-scene, the characters are completely not where they were a moment ago – you can fix it or not allow it at all.

Otherwise, no more than 5 hours of real play passes from misunderstanding to love. Provided that you do not know the series at all, do not like cultures and do not understand anything about it at all. But after the first five hours, you almost irrevocably fall in love with the game and follow its story to the very end, gradually becoming a fan.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon can certainly be loved for the plot, the characters and their disclosure, the incredible atmosphere and spectacle that sometimes goes against reality. But that’s why we love games. The game has very minor technical flaws and a couple of moments that are not at all fundamental for enjoyment. Otherwise, it’s a good game. Yakuza: Like a Dragon can be safely recommended for review.

Pros:

  • Plot
  • Atmosphere
  • Boevka
  • Characters and their disclosure
  • Fair 4K on Xbox Series X

Minuses:

  • Random battles
  • No localization
  • Sometimes drawn-out dialogues
  • Minor technical flaws

Verdict : Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a good game with a very strong and deep storyline, which is really interesting to follow. The plot raises many philosophical questions and shows life as it is. There are many cool characters here, the disclosure of which is in no way inferior to the plot itself. But you still need to understand that the game is far from for everyone, both in the bad and in the good sense of this phrase. Nevertheless, it is definitely possible and necessary to become familiar with it, at least for general development.

Score – 8
