Godlike Burger and Ravenous Devils are all about cooking and selling food, with the chefs getting their meat from the customers in both cases. Here are just Godlike Burger – a stealth action game with traps and an admixture of a time manager, and Ravenous Devils is a classic time manager without additives. The fact that Ravenous Devils is inspired by the film adaptation of the musical “Sweeney Todd” becomes clear almost immediately. A similar era, a filthy, hateful city and a building once inhabited by a barber, fully equipped for both murder and dismemberment. A couple is moving in. He is a tailor, she is a cook, and both have hands up to the elbow in someone else’s blood. They come to a new place so as not to arouse suspicion in the old one, and also to cash in on their talents.
This is how the home is set up. There are meat grinders and cutting tables in the basement, where the wife butchers the bodies and cooks pies in the ovens for sale. She knows that for the best taste, you need to add two secret ingredients to the dish: love and blood. A cat also lives in the basement, which helps with the search for cheap squeaky meat, if it is stroked from time to time.
On the ground floor there is a pub where people come for pies. Some take them from the self-service storefront, others sit in the hall and make orders. To make your job easier, you can hire a waiter boy by switching the entire floor to automatic mode.
The studio is located on the second floor. Here the husband kills people, removes clothes from the bodies of clients, dumps the bodies through the hatch into the basement (for cutting), and hems the clothes himself and sells them as new.
Above the studio is an attic. There is a small garden where food ingredients grow. There is a bath here, where you can also throw corpses, and over time they will turn into good fertilizer. In addition, a carnivorous plant can be grown here, which will poison very black jokes.
The gameplay is obvious. In the basement and on the first floor you control the wife, on the second and attic – the husband. The player’s task is to fulfill the requirements of customers in time, and kill them with subsequent cooking.
The first problem with this game is that it is monstrously simple. It is simply impossible to lose here. Where the bloody fawn happens, customers simply cannot go. There is no police. And if they didn’t make food on time, then it’s okay. The client will go home angry and you just won’t make any money. No one takes rent and the ingredients are free, so the money is only spent on upgrades, and if one day you earn less than you wanted, it does not matter.
Second problem: the game is very short. The story is linear, the upgrades are cheap, so by the fourth hour you’ll have upgraded the whole house, and by the fifth hour you’ll have finished the game. If we consider that there is no challenge, then this time will fly by very quickly, leaving almost nothing behind. Of course, the game says that after the ending you can continue to play, but what’s the point? Everything is already open and done. Why continue?
The problem is the last and not too important: a strange plot. The story has almost nothing to do with the main gameplay. All story events take place in inserts between game days, and nothing is required from the player. Moreover, according to the plot, you get an assistant and a cat, but when the gameplay starts, you are forced to buy them. Weird? Yes. The screenwriter whips up a drama about a wife, motherhood and pity, which change absolutely nothing in her character and will not change the ending in any way. The ending, by the way, is incomprehensible in Nolan’s way – the player decides for himself how the plot ended.
The combination of problems does not allow calling this product a masterpiece. Ravenous Devils is a good short casual game for lovers of meat-blood and the atmosphere of a London gut in the scenery in the spirit of the last two centuries (it’s impossible to set an exact date, because the costumes of the characters are very different, while they have pretty good photos from the wedding on the shelf).
You can enjoy the game, and then with a pure heart forget about it. And in a way, it’s better a little, but good, like in Ravenous Devils, than with forcibly addictive roguelike elements, like in Godlike Burger.
