Stellaris came out in a shaggy 2016, but Paradox Interactive doesn’t quit their games if they make money (clear to you, Imperator: Rome?!). Let’s start with the last one, since it’s just the least that is in the game.
“Teachers of the Veil” – the race will be adapted to win through a breakthrough into another dimension. Representatives of the race will have mental interaction bonuses, but not ultimate ones.
“Imperial Fief” – your race will already at the start be subject to a developed galactic empire.
Star Catapult – At the start, the race will receive the Star Catapult mega-structure, which will need to be repaired. It fires fleets at enemy systems.
The Progenitor Hive is a good backstory for those who like to play as a race with a gestalt consciousness (robots, bugs, etc.). The race receives several new buildings to build power and experience.
“Children of the Underground” – the race builds houses underground, which increases the cost of construction, but it gets a bonus to production and additional protection in case of bombing. By the way, for the sake of such a background, the authors drew new backdrops in the race menu – there is no longer a surface, but caves.
As we can see, a lot of backstories have been added, but only one is definitely cool. The rest are either useless (a catapult can be built by anyone) or generally unpleasant (to be immediately on someone’s errands – who would like that?). In short, if the dragon in the home world from the Aquatics Species Pack was definitely a cool start for anyone, here you have to play for the interplanetary locust anyway.
But back to our sheep. That is, excuse me, vassals. Stellaris: Overlord promises to expand and, so to speak, develop your relationship with the subjects of civilizations. The game adds two new features. First, now the imposition of vassalage can cause war. And secondly, by offering some race to become your subjects, you can immediately agree on the conditions under which this will happen: will the vassal enter the war for you, will he vote the way you vote, will he give you territories and will he be taxed tribute (or maybe you will pay him for loyalty).
However, the logic of the game at this point begins to limp. If you impose allegiance through war, the basic terms of the vassal treaty will be assigned, and even a completely conquered civilization may refuse to change any item after. Has anyone been conquered? Well! Do you want to assimilate? Uh, stop stop, this was not part of the deal, go to the Black Hole, dear overlord!
In addition, if a vassal has the right not to join your wars, but he drags you into the war that you are already waging, you will have two different wars with different fatigue, and with the same participants. Sawing patches is not loading wagons, but all the same, the authors have something to edit.
Minor details: the Orbital Ring mega-structure has been added. In fact, the same as the main space outpost, but it is created only in the orbit of a habitable planet. You can build ships there, and in the event of an enemy attack, it will become another frontier of space defense.
Yes, the add-on is not the richest in content, and it would be more correct to take it at a discount. Still, the authors gave out a lot for free as a patch (for example, a new system of sanctions for the lack of resources), and the rest of the fun can someday be added to the kit. However, as with Stellaris: Nemesis, don’t expect too much. The development of the game is much slower than we would like. It seems that Stellaris is ripe for a full-fledged sequel.
